Mundon Oaks

We are blessed with so many amazing places in my Essex. Not the Essex that the papers know or the one that is stereotyped by the the Thames corridor but the ancient and wild Essex that we keep for ourselves, unspoilt, hidden. And so it is with these old oak trees, down a winding track, passed a disused church, across some fields and beyond an old moat.

Why these trees are here, we just don't know but they are truly ancient, around 1000 years old and whilst they are now mostly skeletal, they have a raw power, drifting and witchy, as though a ritual is being played out at an imperceptible, geological pace, too slow for our busy eyes.
