Day 250
Robin at the Beth Chatto Gardens, Elmstead Market
Saturday 25th February 2017
We're going to plant up an area at the top of our drive, next to the fence I erected last summer and we are both pretty excited about it. We've changed some of the flower beds at the front of the house and I have a lot of work ahead to build our productive garden, but this is the first full on area that Doff will have designed. So today was plant shopping, with most of the plants coming from the internationally renowned garden of Beth Chatto which is local to us, just the other side of Colchester. It's an incredible place, a mecca for anyone who loves plants, particularly perennials.
Beth Chatto turned her old car park in to a horticultural experiment, creating a huge gravel garden with the intention of not irrigating. We are in the driest corner of the England and for us, planning our garden, it's such a great resource to understand what may work. Today was chilly and grey and as we walked through the garden I noticed a Robin sat in a bush. It sat there chatting away to me, letting me get closer and closer until I was only around 2 feet away; perfect picture with his red breast all puffed out in the cold. I retreated and left him in peace.
