Day 316

Heybridge Basin

Heybridge Basin

Tuesday 2nd May 2017

Back to Chelmsford today after the bank holiday weekend and the roads have that holiday feeling to them, just so quiet. The hedgerows have really filled out over the past couple of weeks, full of Cow Parsley and several feet taller now. As I drove through the Chelmer Valley, the sun kept appearing through the clouds and when it did the light was extraordinary, soft yet crisp, almost with a sheen like silk. This is my favourite type of light but today unfortunately it was intermittent and fleeting.

I stopped off at Heybridge Basin on the way home, it's been a while since I've been here and as a photographer, if you can't find a photograph here you may as well ditch your camera and become a goat herder! As I walked along the Chelmer navigation towards the basin, the light was flat and dull. I took a few shots, sometimes it's almost like a warm up exercise. By the time I reached the sea wall, the sun was just about shining through a thin veil of cloud on to an old boat, Ranger, that I've shot previously for this project. I took photos of a bunch of different subjects, the rickety old jetty, details along the sea wall, an abstract of large and small boats, trying all the while to avoid photographing Ranger again, but that light just kept calling me back.
