The Challenge : “Transport”

Transport. That's the theme and surely not much of a challenge given that the world is full of the stuff; bikes, cars, vans, HGVs, buses, trains. So how do I make this a bit more challenging, maybe buses in action, blurred lines, light trails; all good fun.

What I'm after is something with a story, some notion that there is more to explore, more to understand. I started thinking about the word transport and what it means. There's the bit about carrying goods or people by means of a vehicle. Ok there are definitely stories in there. Then there's something in the dictionary about producing an “overwhelmingly strong emotion”; maybe this has more to it.

I thought about climate change, the impact of fossil fuel powered vehicles, maybe using an old derelict car as a metaphor. How about the earth as our transport around the sun, or maybe a little closer to home as the transport through our lives?

I also considered the choices we make about our transport. A vehicle can say so much about it's owner, about how people see themselves or want others to see them, about their aspirations and dreams for the future, about what they are holding on to from the past or maybe hoping for the return of something lost.

Maybe this plays to the idea of a vehicle as a metaphor for a life lived, of happy days, of family holidays, of writing in condensation, of sleeping on the back seat, of adventure and new discoveries, of the daily commute or distant shores, of sandwiches on the go or maybe being parked up next to a quiet river with a pair of camping chairs and a primus stove!
