Day 122

Retro lights, Chelmsford

Retro lights, Chelmsford

Thursday 20th October

A couple of weeks back, I spotted a shop selling retro lightbulbs which look pretty amazing with many different shapes and sizes all hanging together. Now that the natural light is disappearing so early in the day, this artificial light makes an ideal subject. Some of these retro lightbulbs, actually use strips of LEDs; decorative and environmentally friendly at the same time.

So I'm now 1/3 of the way through and I've been looking back at my experiences. I am much happier with my B&W film results than those on colour film and I really like the tonality of both HP5+ and Tri-X. I'm still not confident on using film in challenging light conditions with bright highlights and deep shadows, something that I normally use the instant feedback of digital photography to judge. I'm also still unsure about the degree of over exposure on Tri-X. Scans from the lab are poor and my scanner just doesn't have a bright enough lamp to scan such dense negatives. I need to experiment further or use a better lab and fortunately UK Film lab has reopened in Canada, so I'll be sending my film to them again.

More recently the early sunsets have pushed me in to embracing the dark side and I'm really happy with the mood and atmosphere I can create in these darker images or with pictures where just one area of the picture is highlighted; I love images with strong contrasts in light and shade.
