Day 157
Morris Men of Maldon
Thursday 24th November
This evening was fun, we headed out to the Maldon Vintage Christmas Fayre. The high street is filled with stages, food stalls, side shows and the good people of Maldon to watch the Christmas lights being switched on. A lot of the shops also stay open and there's a great atmosphere with some of the shop keepers dressing up in vintage costume. We discovered a chocolate company founded on the night of the fayre last year which we didn't know existed; I'm sure we'll be sampling their wares.
We stopped off at Salty Dogs first, an artistic collective from the local area run by a photographer from Goldhanger. Gerrard's boat seats were the centre piece this year. Gerrard is the son-in-law of our neighbours and the skipper of Thames Sailing Barge Dawn, which I was invited to sail on earlier this year.
Doff's favourite without any shadow of doubt are the Morris dancers, such a part of English culture and they always draw a big crowd on the night. A quick stop at The Continental for a cup of tea and a cappuccino, then a bag of chips and home to a pair of cats who felt very unloved!
