Day 241
Art Deco Building in Chelmsford
Thursday 16th February 2017
The sun was in and out on the way to Chelmsford this morning, throwing patches of light across the valley, occasionally spotlighting a copse of trees up on a ridge or glinting off the river. The weather has been so dull and cloudy of late, it's such a welcome relief to see the sun.
On my walk through the city this evening, I stopped at an art deco building, topped with a sunburst. This architecture must have seemed so fresh when it was new, as though a modern future was dawning. When I first saw this building I felt pretty sad that it had been reduced to a Pizza Express. We take design for granted these days, whether that be in our clothes, our mobile phonesor the architecture around us but the Art Deco period really did bring design to the masses. The building is still being used as a public space and at least Pizza Express have undertaken a sensitive renovation.
