Day 180

Tollesbury

Saturday 17th December

It was foggy all day today and very atmospheric. I went out Christmas shopping this morning but fortunately was able to do it locally rather than having to head in to a large town. I went down to Woodrolfe Hard just after high tide, to walk out towards the light ship through the high tide that covers the path.

It felt much colder down by the water, with the high tide and the saturated air but so quiet as though the fog was holding back all sound. So still, not a breath of wind, very atmospheric. There were few people around and few sounds of birds as all the noisy waders had no mud to wade through. The lightship was a vague shadow in the fog, a presence with little shape or form but something so tall is unmistakable on the skyline. Looking out to the north, I could see boats moored on their berths lost in the fog with the tips of grasses just poking through the receding tide. Such an evocative landscape, or maybe waterscape.
