Day 310

Woodrolfe Hard, Tollesbury

Woodrolfe Hard, Tollesbury

Wednesday 26th April 2017

It's been cold all day and I even had to clear the icy slush off my windscreen before driving home tonight. I can't help but think back to the week we moved in, lovely sunny warm weather and so different from this week. The heating is on, at least for a few hours. Back to Woodrolfe Hard tonight for a wander and some photos. So cold, with a real edge to the breeze but so quiet. The good folk of Tollesbury are wrapped up and warm at home tonight.

I sometimes feel that silhouettes are a bit of an easy way out with a photo. They're usually pretty eye catching, but somehow they're too easy to shoot or maybe they're usually just one dimensional shots that don't hold the eye beyond that initial wow. And so tonight I was struggling with this shot or rather struggling with how not to make it a silhouette. How do I hold the foreground so that it's got detail in it, even though it will naturally be very dark?

The more I stood looking at the scene I realised that it's the light shining through the old barn that lifts the shot beyond a normal silhouette. There's something contemplative about it, calm, yet intimate with subtle light in the sky adding to the mood. I love silhouette's, aren't they great?
